Gamba, Piero (Pierino) (b Rome, 1937). It. conductor and pianist. Child prodigy, son of professional violinist, who cond. an orch. in Rome Opera House in Beethoven's 1st sym. at age of 8. Toured Eur. and N. and S. Amer. London début 1948, cond. Beethoven and Dvořák in Harringay Arena. Moved to Madrid 1952 and resumed career in late 1950s. Visited London 1959–63 and recorded Beethoven's 5 pf. concs. with Julius Katchen. Mus. dir., Winnipeg SO 1970–81; Adelaide SO 1980–8.
