Malec, Ivo

Malec, Ivo, Croatian-born French composer, conductor, and teacher; b. Zagreb, March 30, 1925. He studied at the Univ. and at the Academy of Music in Zagreb (1945–51). He was director of the Rijeka (Fiume) Opera (1952–53). In 1955 he traveled to Paris, where he met Pierre Schaeffer (1957) and participated in his Groupe de Musique Concrète. In 1959 he settled in Paris and joined the Service de la Recherche de I’ORTF in 1960. He also worked with the Groupe de Recherche Musicale and taught at the Paris Cons. (1972–90). In 1992 he won the Grand Prix national de la musique. He has been honored by the French government as a Commandeur des Arts et Lettres. From 1956 his music has explored the extremes of timbre and complexity.
