ETHNONYMS: Guatuso, Guatuzo, Jaika

The Maleku are a group of fewer than 200 Indians living in the middle of Costa Rica, near the border with Nicaragua. They have little sense of tribal identity, are very acculturated, and speak Spanish as their mother tongue. Their traditional territory was once much larger than it is today.
