Nachbaur, Franz (Ignaz)

Nachbaur, Franz (Ignaz), German tenor; b. Giessen, near Friedrichshafen, March 25, 1830; d. Munich, March 21, 1902. He studied with Pischek in Stuttgart and Lamperti in Milan, making his debut in Passau (1857). He then sang in Basel (1857), Hannover (1859–60), Prague (1860–63), and Darmstadt (1863–68). He made his first appearance at the Munich Court Opera on June 24, 1867, in Flotow’s Alessandro Stradella; subsequently was one of its principal members, and was chosen to create the roles of Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (June 21, 1868) and Froh in Das Rheingold (Sept. 22, 1869). He made his London debut in Euryanthe at Drury Lane (1882). He gave his farewell performance at the Munich Court Opera as Chapelou in Adam’s Le Postillon de Longjumeau on Oct. 13, 1890, his 1,001st appearance there.
