Philbert Maurice D'Ocagne

1862-1938

French mathematician who created the field of nomography—the study of nomograms being used by engineers and others for graphical calculation of equations. Many of the equations can be represented graphically by three curves, often straight lines, in a plane such that the relationship among three variables is represented by the alignment of three points, one on each curve. D'Ocagne's work was translated into more than twelve languages.
