James Dawkins
James Dawkins
British traveler and archaeologist who, with Robert Wood, surveyed sites in the Eastern Mediterranean in 1750-51. Dawkins and Wood's expedition, which took them to Greece, Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, was one of several in the mid-eighteenth century that revealed the depth and complexity of ancient history to the British public. These expeditions stimulated public interest in classical antiquities as objects of both historical and aesthetic interest.
