James Augustus Grant

1827-1892

British soldier and explorer who, with John Speke, set out to discover the source of the Nile River. As a soldier, Grant saw action during the Indian Mutiny and the Abyssinian campaign. As an explorer, Grant is best known for his book A Walk Across Africa, in which he published his observations about the native customs and geography of those parts of Africa he explored. Grant retired from the British Army as a colonel.
