Heinrich Otto Wieland
1877-1957
German chemist who received the 1927 Nobel Prize for his research on the constitution of bile acids. Weiland's determination of the molecular structure of these acids later led to the discovery of steroids related to cholesterol. Among his important contributions to structural organic chemistry was the discovery that different forms of nitrogen in organic compounds could be detected and distinguished from one another.
