Heinrich Eduard Heine
1821-1881
German mathematician who made important contributions to the field of mathematical analysis. He is best known for formulating Heine's theorem, also known as the Heine-Borel theorem, which states that "a subset of the reals is compact if and only if it is closed and bounded." Heine also worked on Legendre polynomials, Bessel functions, problems of continuity, and Lamé functions.
