Heinz Hopf

Heinz Hopf

1894-1971

German mathematician known for his work in algebraic topology. Hopf became interested in mathematics while serving in World War I. Later, he studied at the University of Berlin and in 1925 received his Ph.D. He accepted a chair in Zurich, Switzerland, and is remembered for his formula about the integral curvature and for what came to be known as the "Hopf invariant."
