Laminariales (division Phaeophyta) An order of brown seaweeds in which there is a heteromorphic alternation of generations, with a large sporophyte and a microscopic gametophyte. The sporophyte is usually differentiated into holdfast, stipe, and blade. There are 4 families, and many genera, found mainly in cold and temperate seas.
