Mateo García Pumacagua (mätā´ō gärsē´ä pōōmäkä´gwä, –kä´wä), 1738–1815, Peruvian Native American leader. He aided in suppressing the insurrection (1780–81) of Tupac Amaru and later the first rebellion in the war against Spain; in 1814, however, he led an uprising. Beginning in Cuzco, the movement spread, gaining force from Pumacagua's great influence over the Native Americans. After initial successes the Native Americans were defeated, and Pumacagua was put to death.
