Catherine of Aragon (1485–1536) Daughter of Ferdinand V and Isabella I, she was the first queen of Henry VIII of England (1509). Her only surviving child was a daughter (Mary I). The need to produce a male heir, combined with Henry's desire for Anne Boleyn, induced him to seek an annulment (1527) on the grounds of her previous marriage to his brother Arthur. Pope Clement VII's procrastination led to the break with Rome and to the English Reformation. The annulment was granted by Thomas Cranmer in 1533.
