Catherine de Clermont (fl. 16th c.)

French military hero. Flourished 16th century in Clermont, France.

Very few facts remain about Catherine de Clermont, a noblewoman who became countess of Clermont. In the medieval period in Europe, noblewomen were often expected to defend their castles from enemy attack in the absence of husbands or fathers. Loyal to the monarchy, Catherine was a fearless leader who commanded her own troops in the defense of her estates and successfully brought Clermont back under the authority of the French king.
