Queen of Castile and Léon. Name variations: Catalina; Katherine of Lancaster; Katherine Plantagenet. Born in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England, in 1372 (some sources cite 1373); died in Valladolid, Castile and Leon, Spain, on June 2, 1418; daughter of Constance of Castile (1354–1394) and John of Gaunt, 1st duke of Lancaster (his first wife was Blanche of Lancaster ); half-sister of Joan Beaufort (c. 1379–1440), Henry IV, king of England (r. 1399–1413), and Philippa of Lancaster (c. 1359–1415); married Enrique also known as Henry III (b. 1379), king of Castile and Léon (r. 1390–1406); children: four, including Juan also known as John II (1405–1454), king of Castile (r. 1406–1454); Catalina (1403–1439, who married Henry of Aragon, duke of Villena); Maria of Castile (1401–1458).
