Sidelights

R. Conrad Stein is the author of educational children's reference books, such as The World War II D-Day Invasion in American History, Cape Town, The Transcontinental Railroad in American History, and Mexico City. As Susan Dove Lempke stated in Booklist regarding the author's Mexico City part of the "Cities of the World" series"Stein is particularly adept at highlighting points of interest for children" and his book is enhanced by elements such as a map, a "fast facts" section that clearly presents demographic and other data, "and a glossary." Cape Town, another of Stein's contributions to the series, is "an enthusiastic introduction to the vital South African legislative capital," according to Booklist contributor Hazel Rochman, the critic adding that "Excellent, full-color photographs enhance Stein's discussion of the breathtaking scenery and the rich multiracial, multicultural society."

Titles such as Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, The Transcontinental Railroad in American History, and The World War II D-Day Invasion in American History allow Stein the chance to present the events that shaped the modern United States to young researchers. As Eldon Younce noted in School Library Journal, The World War II D-Day Invasion in American History is a "fine history," while Rochman added of the series companion The Transcontinental Railroad in American History that the author presents a "lively account of the people who built the first railroad" and clearly "communicates the excitement of the technology as well as the rising tension" caused by the historic race between railroad builders heading from both coasts to their inland meeting place.
