GOLDSTEIN, Jonathan (Amos) 1929-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born July 19, 1929, in New York, NY; died December 1, 2004, in Iowa City, IA. Classicist, historian, educator, and author. Goldstein was a scholar of ancient history and professor emeritus at the University of Iowa. A Harvard graduate, where he earned a B.A. in 1950 and an M.A. in 1951, he received a master's degree in Hebrew literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1955 and a doctorate in ancient history from Columbia University in 1959. After teaching at Columbia for two years, the rest of his academic career was spent at the University of Iowa, where he taught from 1962 until his 1997 retirement. Fluent in classical languages, he translated many ancient texts into English for his students to read, emphasizing that they should understand the history of the region to put religious beliefs into context. Goldstein published five respected scholarly works in his lifetime, including The Letters of Demosthenes (1968), Semites, Iranians, Greeks, and Romans (1990), and Peoples of an Almighty God: Competing Religions in the Ancient World (2001).
