Eggerth, Martha (real name, Márta Eggert)
Eggerth, Martha (real name, Márta Eggert), Hungarian soprano; b. Budapest, April 17, 1912. She was only 12 when she began appearing in juvenile roles in light theater performances in Budapest. In 1930 she attracted favorable notice in the title role of Das Veilchen vom Montmartre in Vienna, and in subsequent years had a notably successful career both on stage and in films. Her theater engagements took her all over Europe and to N.Y., where she was notably successful in The Merry Widow with her husband, Jan Kiepura. She pursued her career to an advanced age, appearing in her 80th year in Stolz’s Servus Du in Vienna.
