Eggert, Joachim (Georg) Nicolas

Eggert, Joachim (Georg) Nicolas , German violinist, conductor, pedagogue, and composer; b. Gingst, Riigen, Feb. 22, 1779; d. Thomestorp, Ostergot-land, April 14, 1813. He received training in violin, piano, and harp from J. R Dammas in Gingst, in violin and composition from R G. Kahlow in Stralsund, and in theory from Ferdinand Fischer. After serving as music director of the court theater of the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1802, he went to Stockholm in 1803 and joined the Swedish Royal Orch. as a violinist; he later was its conductor (1808–10). In 1807 he was elected to membership in the Swedish Royal Academy of Music. His works follow in the Viennese classical tradition, which he introduced to Sweden in his capacity as a conductor. He wrote five syms., coronation music for King Karl XIII of Sweden (1809), chamber music, including nine string quartets and a Piano Quartet, and five cantatas and other vocal pieces.
