Bach, Johann Michael

Bach, Johann Michael, brother of Johann Christoph; b. Arnstadt, Aug. 9, 1648; d. Gehren, May 17, 1694. He was the father of Maria Barbara, first wife of Johann Sebastian. From 1673 he was organist and town clerk of Gehren, where he also worked as a maker of instruments. His works are listed in the Bach-Jahrbuch (1907, pp. 109–32); many of them are included in Das Erbe deutscher Musik (vol. I, Leipzig, 1935); motets of his are publ. in Denkmäler Deutscher Tonkunst (vols. 49 and 50, 1915). Some of his organ compositions are found in Das Erbe deutscher Musik (vol. IX, Leipzig, 1937); 72 organ chorales are included in D. Hellmann, ed., Orgel-werke der Familie Bach (Leipzig, 1967); 25 such works, including 13 recently discovered pieces, are included in C. Wolff, ed., The Neumeister Collection of Chorale Preludes from the Bach Circle (Yale Univ. Manuscript LM 4708) (facsimile ed., New Haven, 1986).
