Bach, Johann Bernhard

Bach, Johann Bernhard, son of Johann Aegidius, one of the best organists and composers of his generation; b. Erfurt, Nov. 23, 1676; d. Eisenach, June 11, 1749. He was an organist at Erfurt and Magdeburg, and the successor to Johann Christoph as organist at Eisenach (1703); also served the Duke of Saxe-Eisenach. He wrote harpsichord pieces and a number of organ chorales, two of which were publ. in Das Erbe deutscher Musik (vol. IX, Leipzig, 1937) and two more in D. Hellmann, ed., Orgelwerke der Familie Bach (Leipzig, 1967). He also wrote four orch. suites, one of which was publ. by A. Fareanu (Leipzig, 1920) and another by K. Geiringer, Music of the Bach Family: An Anthology (Cambridge, Mass., 1955).
