Medici, Maddalena de (d. 1519)

Florentine noblewoman . Name variations: Maddalena Cybo, Cibo, or Cibò. Died at the villa of Careggi in 1519; eldest daughter of Lorenzo de Medici (1449–1492), the Magnificent, and Clarice de Medici (c. 1453–1487); married Franceschetto or Francesco Cybo (son of Pope Innocent VIII), on January 20, 1488; children: Innocenzo Cibò, cardinal; Lorenzo Cibò (who married Ricciarda Malaspina, princess of Massa); Caterina Cibò; , duchess of Camerino.

Pope Innocent VIII, impressed with the flourishing House of Medici, expressed interest in establishing an alliance with it through one of his sons. Lorenzo the Magnificent offered his eldest daughter Maddalena. When young Francesco Cibò and his retinue arrived from Rome for the marriage, they were feted grandly in separate lodgings from the Medici Palace. But when Cibò was invited to stay with the Medicis, he was affronted by their simple style of living, so unlike the luxuries he was used to in the Papal palace at Rome. Francesco took it as a personal insult until it was explained to him that he was now considered part of the family and that that was how the family lived.
