Lussu, Joyce Salvadori (1912–1988)

Italian novelist, essayist and poet. Born Joyce Salvadori, 1812, in Florence, Italy; died Nov 4, 1988, in Rome, Italy; dau. of Gugliemo Salvadori and Giacinta Galletti; sister of Max Salvadori; studied at Heidelberg University, Sorbonne, and Lisbon University; m. Emilio Lussu.

With brother, received non-conformist education in Switzerland; with anti-fascist husband, became a leader in the Movimento di Giustizia e Libertà resistance group (1932) and often lived in exile; out of her experiences, wrote Fronti e frontiere: Collana della liberazione (Freedom Has No Frontier, 1945); traveled widely and translated avant-garde writers of Africa and Asia; other writings include Liriche (1939), Donne come te (1957), Tradurre poesia (1967), Padre, Padrone, Padreterno (1976), L'uomo che voleva nascere donna (1978), and Donne, guerra e società (1982); translated work of Turkish poet Nazim Hikmèt.
