American writer and translator. Born June 1, 1909, in Bobruisk, Byelorussia (now Belarus); died Dec 26, 2000, in Port Jefferson, NY.
Lived with family in Latvia before immigrating to Canada (1928), then settling in US; specialized in translating Russian and Yiddish works into English; wrote more than 35 books for children, including Good Morning Chick, The Two Greedy Bears and Clay Boy; also translated Dostoyevsky, Mikhail Bulgakov and Isaac Bashevis Singer.
