Baddeley, Angela (1904–1976)

English actress. Born Madeleine Angela Clinton-Baddeley on July 4, 1904, in London, England; died in 1976; daughter of W.H. Clinton-Baddeley and Louise (Bourdin) Clinton-Baddeley; sister of actressHermione Baddeley (1906–1986); married Stephen Kerr Thomas (divorced); married Glen Byam Shaw.

Angela Baddeley made her stage debut at the Old Vic on November 22, 1915, as the little Duke of York in Richard III. A popular stage actress in England, Baddeley frequently appeared as Jenny Diver in The Beggar's Opera during a successful three-year run (1920–23). She also played Anne Boleyn in Sybil Thorndike 's revival of Henry VIII (1925); the title role in Marigold (1927); the title role in Sadie Dupont (1928); Phyllis Richmond in Thunder on the Left (1928); Phoebe in Quality Street (1929); Lady Teazle in The School for Scandal (1929); Mary Barker in To Account Rendered (1931); Lisa de Montorio in The Love Pirate (1932); Jennie Warwick in Night of the Garter (1932); Sylvette in The Fantasticks (1933); Schatze in The Greeks Had a Word for It (1934); Olivia Grayne in Night Must Fall (1935); Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice (1936); Lady Anne in Richard III at the Old Vic (1937); Natasha in Three Sisters (1938); Grace Fenning in Dear Octopus (1938); Cattrin in The Light of Heart (1940); Miss Prue in Love for Love (1943); Catherine Winslow in TheWinslow Boy (1946); Constance in The Mad Woman of Chaillot (1951); Mae Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie (1961); Madame Ranevsky in The Cherry Orchard (1965); Zinaida Savishna in Ivanov (1965).

Baddeley made her U.S. stage debut in Night Must Fall at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on September 28, 1936. She was also a member of the Old Vic Company (1949–50), and the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company at Stratford-on-Avon (1955, 1958, 1959). Her British television appearances included "Play of the Week" and "Armchair Theatre." She also played Mrs. Bridges, the cook, in the highly successful British television production "Upstairs, Downstairs." Her movies include: The Speckled Band (1931), Arms and the Man (1932), The Ghost Train (1932), The Safe (1932), Those Were the Days (1934), The Citadel (1938), Quartet (1948), Zoo Baby (1957), and Tom Jones (1963).
