Reginald Huber Fitz

1843-1913

American pathologist who studied in Berlin under Rudolf Virchow and was instrumental in advancing the understanding of the cell as a component of disease. Fitz's systematic use of clinical and bedside observation led him to his greatest contributions to medicine, the characterization of acute appendicitis and acute pancreatitis. A Professor at Harvard Medical School, Fitz was known for his extensive clinical studies and for his microscopic examination of tissues.
