Antonio Scarpa

Italian anatomist, surgeon, and artist, known for his careful research, many anatomical discoveries, and precise drawings. In his clinical practice he was especially skilled in ophthalmology and orthopedics. He developed new methods for treating hernia and clubfoot and was the first to recognize hardening of the interior of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. His greatest work is an illustrated anatomy of the nervous system, Tabulae nevrologicae (1794), which includes the first accurate description of the nerves of the heart.
