Confederate States the eleven Southern states, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, which seceded from the United States in 1860–1, thus precipitating the American Civil War.
