Revolutions of 1989 Popular risings in East European states against communist governments. Long-suppressed opposition to Soviet-dominated rule erupted spontaneously in most of the Soviet satellite states. Within months, the communists were driven from power, and democratic systems installed. The risings were followed by the withdrawal of the constituent republics from the Soviet Union which, although unwelcome to Moscow, also encountered little serious resistance.
