Lusaka
Lusaka Capital and largest city of Zambia, in the s central part of the country, at an altitude of 1280m (4200ft). Founded by Europeans in 1905 to service the local lead-mining, it replaced Livingstone as the capital of Northern Rhodesia (later Zambia) in 1935. A vital road and rail junction, Lusaka is the centre of a fertile agricultural region, and is a major financial and commercial city. Industries: textiles, shoe manufacture, cement, food processing, car assembly, brewing. Pop. (2002 est.) 1,218,200.
