Juan Carlos (1938– ) King of Spain (1975– ), grandson of Alfonso XIII. In 1975, Juan Carlos succeeded General Franco and set about the democratization of Spanish society. Juan survived an attempted military coup (1981). He is married (1962– ) to Princess Sophia of Greece.
