Dowell, Sir Anthony
Dowell, Sir Anthony (1943– ) English ballet dancer. Noted for his agility and grace, he joined the Royal Ballet in 1961, and was its principal dancer (1966–86). Many great choreographers created roles specifically for him, and he was principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater (1978–80). He succeeded Norman Morrice as director of the Royal Ballet (1986–2001).
