Arets, Wiel
Arets, Wiel (1955– ). Dutch architect. He established (1984) Wiel Arets & Associates and went on to win the Rotterdam-Maaskant Prize for Young Architects in 1989. Realized projects include police-stations in Cuijk (1994–7), Boxtel (1994–7), and Vaals (1993–5), offices for AZL in Heerlen (1990–5), headquarters for the police-force of South Limburg, Heerlen (1994–8), an apartment-block in Tilburg (1992–4), an office-block in Maastricht (1990–5), the National Art Academy, Maastricht (1989–93), and the apartment-building on KNSM island, Amsterdam (1990–6), all in The Netherlands. His work tends to be hard-edged, and is associated with so-called ‘Calvinist austerity’.
