Aretino, Paolo

Aretino, Paolo, Italian composer; b. Arezzo (baptized), March 1, 1508; d. there, July 19, 1584. He spent his entire career in Arezzo, where he became a priest. After service at S. Maria della Pieve (1530–33), he became a canon at the Cathedral in 1533, where he also was maestro di cappella from 1538 to 1544. He then returned to S. Maria della Pieve as a canon. He publ. much sacred music (Venice, 1544–69) and a vol. of madrigals (Venice, 1558).
