WORK IN PROGRESS: Volumes in the "National Park Adventure" series, forthcoming from Fulcrum Press.

SIDELIGHTS: College professor, meteorologist, and long-time children's book writer, Mike Graf has over sixty titles to his credit, some included in book series that seek to educate and aid teachers in the classroom by focusing on topics such as weather, America's national parks, and the life and geography of countries throughout the world. Karen Stuppi, writing in School Library Journal, reviewed The Amazon River and The Nile River and explained that both books present data about these major rivers, discuss the cities and other points of interest along their banks, and contain "sufficient information for reports." Karen Land, also writing in School Library Journal, wrote of Graf's book Africa that the volume, part of the "Continents" series, combines "visual comparisons, geographical facts, and color-coded Mercator maps with well-written explanatory texts." Land went on to praise the book's "full-color graphics," which she described as "well done and inviting."

Graf once commented: "I have written stories ever since I was a child. My first published book was The Weather Report—a teacher's guide to teaching about weather. Now I have over sixty books out for children and teachers, many of them fiction adventure stories for eight through twelve year olds. That means I get to go places like national parks and caves, and storm chase and rock climb, and write about it! Last summer I hiked across the Grand Canyon while doing research for my newest book.

"My favorite children's book is Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth because it is so creative and interesting. I would advise aspiring writers to keep pressing on. Practice your craft and keep writing whether your stories get recognition or not. Keep editing them and seeking feedback and save them. You never know when the first published book is going to come! When I am writing I like to get away from the busy lives that we have and go do something like hike or bike ride where my mind can just wander. This is when I get my best ideas!"
