CANDLER, Warren A(kin) 1857-1941

PERSONAL: Born August 23, 1857, near Villa Rica, GA; died of bronchial pneumonia, September 25, 1941, in Atlanta, GA; son of Samuel Charles (a farmer and merchant) and Martha (Beale; some sources cite maiden name as Beall) Candler; married Sarah Antoinette Curtright (some sources cite maiden name as Cartwright), November 21, 1877; children: Annie Florence, John Curtright, Warren Akin, Emory, Samuel Charles. Education: Emory College (now University), graduated (with honors), 1875.

CAREER: Minister of North Georgia Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, beginning c. 1875; Methodist Episcopal bishop, 1898-1934. Emory University, Atlanta, GA, president, 1888-98, chancellor, 1914-22. Ecumenical Methodist Conference, delegate, 1891; missionary in Cuba, beginning 1898, and Mexico, 1903-10; supervisor of missionaries in the Far East, including Korea. Vanderbilt University, served as member of board of trustees; Paine College, founding member of board of trustees, 1884-c. 1909.

AWARDS, HONORS: Candler School of Theology named in Candler's honor at Emory University; a college in Havana, Cuba, and a hospital in Savannah, GA, were also named for Candler.
