Trån, Van Khê

Trån, Van Khê, Vietnamese ethnomusicologist; b. Binh Hoa Dong, July 24, 1921. He studied medicine in Hanoi (1941-43), then went to Paris to attend the Institut d’Études Politiques (1949-51). He studied orga-nology with Schaeffner and musicology with Chailley of the Faculté des Lettres (1952-58), and historical research with Gaspardone at the Collège de France (1954-57); received his doctorate with the diss. La Musique vietnamienne traditionelle (1958; publ. in Paris, 1962). In 1960 he joined the CNRS, where he became director of research in 1973. In 1964 he became director of the Centre d’Études de Musique Orientale, where he taught Vietnamese instrumental performance. He began teaching at the Institut de Musicologie of the Univ. of Paris in 1968. His research focuses on the systematic and comparative study of Asian musical languages. He publ. Viêt-Nam: Les Traditions musicales (Paris, 1967).
