Nottebohm, (Martin) Gustav

Nottebohm, (Martin) Gustav, distinguished German musicologist; b. Lüdenscheid, Westphalia, Nov. 12, 1817; d. Graz, Oct. 29, 1882. He studied with Berger and Dehn in Berlin (1838–39), with Mendelssohn and Schumann in Leipzig (1840–45), and finally with Sechter in Vienna (1846), where he settled as a music teacher. He revised the Beethoven ed. publ, by Breitkopf & Härtel, prepared thematic catalogues of the works of Beethoven and Schubert, and edited some of the works of Mozart. Of particular importance are his studies of Beethoven’s sketchbooks.
