Larchet, John F(rancis)

Larchet, John F(rancis), Irish composer and teacher; b. Dublin, July 13, 1884; d. there, Aug. 10, 1967. He studied in Dublin with Esposito at the Royal Irish Academy of Music before completing his training at the Univ. (B. Mus., 1915; D. Mus., 1917). From 1907 to 1934 he was music director of Dublin’s Abbey Theatre. He also was prof, of composition at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (1920–55) and prof, of music at Univ. Coll., Dublin. He composed the orch. works Lament for Youth (1939), Dirge ofOisin for Strings (1940), and By the Waters ofMoyle (1957), choral pieces, and songs.
