Laplante, (Joseph) André (Roger)

Laplante, (Joseph) André (Roger), Canadian pianist; b. Rimouski, Quebec, Nov. 12, 1949. He commenced piano studies at 7, then continued his training with Nathalie Pépin and Yvonne Hubert at the École Vincent-d’Indy in Montreal (B.Mus., 1968; M.Mus., 1970). He then pursued further studies with Gorodnitzki at the Juilliard School in N.Y. (1970-71; 1976-78) and with Lefébure in Paris (1971–74). He won 3rd prizes in the Long-Thibaud (Paris, 1973) and Sydney (1977) competitions, and then shared 2nd prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1978); made his N.Y. recital debut (Oct. 21, 1978), and subsequently toured throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East. In 1988 he organized his own trio with the violinist Ernö Sebestyén and the cellist Martin Ostertag. He won accolades for his performances of the Romantic repertoire.
