Heyman, Katherine Ruth Willoughby

Heyman, Katherine Ruth Willoughby, American pianist and composer; b. Sacramento, Calif., 1877; d. Sharon, Conn., Sept. 28, 1944. She made her debut as soloist with the Boston Sym. Orch.in 1899, and from 1905 to 1915 she toured the U.S. and Europe with Schumann-Heink, Marcella Sembrich, and others. She became greatly interested in the works of Scriabin, and played recitals of his works in Europe and America. She also publ, many articles on Scriabin’s theosophic ideas. In 1928 she founded in Paris the Groupe Estival pour la Musique Moderne. She publ. The Relation of Ultra-Modern to Archaic Music (Boston, 1921). Among her compositions were Studies in Modern Idiom for Piano and songs.
