Fischer, György, Hungarian-born Austrian conductor and pianist; b. Budapest, Aug. 12, 1935. He received training at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and at the Salzburg Mozarteum. After working as an assistant to Karajan at the Vienna State Opera, where he conducted works by Mozart, he was active as a conductor at the Cologne Opera (from 1973). In 1973 he made his British debut conducting Die Zauberflote with the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff; made his London debut conducting Mitridate in 1979. From 1980 he appeared as a conductor with the English Chamber Orch. in London; also conducted widely in other European music centers, as well as in North and South America, and in Australia. As a piano accompanist, he toured the world with many outstanding artists. For a time he was married to Lucia Popp.
