Fischer, Annie (actually, Anny)

Fischer, Annie (actually, Anny), distinguished Hungarian pianist; b. Budapest, July 5, 1914; d.

there, April 11, 1995. She attended the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and also was a pupil of Szekely and Dohnanyi. At the age of 8, she made her first public appearance in Budapest as soloist in Beethoven’s 1st piano concerto. Her formal debut followed in Zurich in 1926. After winning 1st prize in the Liszt Competition in Budapest in 1933, she performed throughout Europe until World War II forced her to seek refuge in Sweden. After the War, she pursued an international career as a soloist with orchs. and as a recitalist. She was widely admired for her patrician interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. In 1937 she married Aladár Tόth.
