Aronowitz, Cecil (Solomon)

Aronowitz, Cecil (Solomon), South Africanborn English violist and teacher of Russian-Lithuanian descent; b. King William’s Town, March 4, 1916; d. Ipswich, Sept. 7, 1978. He studied at the Royal Coll. of Music in London, where his principal teachers were Vaughan Williams and Jacob (composition) and Rivarde (violin). He turned to the viola later in life, and served as first violist in the Boyd Neel Orch., the Goldsborough (later English) Chamber Orch., and the London Mozart Players; also was a member of the Melos Ensemble and the Pro Arte Piano Quartet. He was a prof. of viola at the Royal Coll. of Music (1948–75), head of the string school at the Royal Northern Coll. of Music in Manchester (1975–77), and director of string studies at the Snape Makings School (1977–78).
