Anthony, Charles (real name, Carlogero Antonio Caruso)

Anthony, Charles (real name, Carlogero Antonio Caruso), American tenor; b. New Orleans, July 15, 1929. He was a student of Dorothy Hulse at Loyola Univ. In 1952 he won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air, and then completed his training in Rome with Picozzi and Ruisi. On March 6, 1954, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as the Simpleton in Boris Godunov, and subsequently remained on its roster for 40 seasons. Among the more important roles he sang there were Count Almaviva (1954), Rodolfo (1959), Don Ottavio (1960), Nemorino (1961), Alfredo (1962), and Ferrando (1962). He also made guest appearances with other U.S. opera companies.
