The Secret Lives of Dentists ★★★ 2002 (R)

Rudolph's funny, deadon take on married dentists in crisis. Mildmannered David (Scott) suspects his wife and fellow dentist Dana (Davis) may be having an affair with a member of her community opera troupe when his imagination begins to go wild. His acerbic, misogynist patient (Leary in a nobrainer bit of casting) plays devil's advocate as David begins to see him everywhere, imparting advice on how to handle the situation. As the marriage continues to decay, David's hilarious waking dreams continue unabated and he is forced to deal with the darker side of his milquetoast persona. Refreshingly realistic, original, and wellacted. Based on the novel “The Age of Grief” by Jane Smiley. 104m/C VHS, DVD . US Campbell Scott, Hope Davis, Denis Leary, Robin Tunney, Kevin Carroll; D: Alan Rudolph; W: Craig Lucas; C: Florian Ballhaus; M: Gary DeMichele. Ind. Spirit '04: Support. Actress (Davis); N.Y.
