The title is short for “melodrama” so you know exactly when sort of story you're in for. Discontented Romaine begins an affair with womanizing concert violinist Marcel, an old friend of her boring husband Pierre's. While Marcel is away on tour, Pierre becomes seriously (and suspiciously) ill. When Romaine's perfidy is discovered, she commits suicide. However, years later, Pierre demands the truth from Marcel.
