The Mask ★★★ 1994 (PG-13)

Adolescent supernatural comedy with lollapalooza special effects is Carrey's follow-up to “Ace Ventura.” Mild-mannered bank clerk Carrey discovers an ancient mask that has supernatural powers. Upon putting on the mask, he turns into one truly animated guy. He falls for a dame mixed up with gangsters and from there on, our hero deals not only with the incredible powers of the mask, but with hormones and bad guys as well. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series and originally conceived as a horror flick, director Russell, who gave Freddy Krueger a sense of humor, recast this one as a hellzapoppin' cartoon-action black comedy. Carrey's rubber face is an asset magnified by the breakthrough special effects courtesy of Industrial Light and Magic. 100m/C VHS, DVD . Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, Peter Greene, Peter Riegert, Amy Yasbeck, Orestes Matacena, Richard Jeni, Ben Stein; D: Chuck Russell; W: Mike Werb; C: John R. Leonetti; M: Randy Edelman. Blockbuster ‘95: Comedy Actor, T. (Carrey), Female Newcomer, T. (Diaz); Blockbuster ‘96: Comedy Actor, V. (Carrey).
