Kramer, Leonie (1924—)

Australian educator and writer. Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1924; educated at the universities of Melbourne and Oxford.

A professor of Australian literature and an expert on the works of Henry Handel Richardson , Dame Leonie Kramer was a professor at the University of Sydney from 1968 and was also active in numerous community and educational organizations. Her works on Richardson include Henry Handel Richardson and Some of Her Sources (1954), A Companion to Australia Felix (1962), a guide to Richardson's work, and Myself When Laura (1966), concerning Richard-son's novel The Getting of Wisdom. In collaboration with R.D. Eagleson, Kramer wrote Language and Literature: A Synthesis (1976) and A Guide to Language and Literature (1978). She also edited a number of scholarly volumes, including Australian Poetry (1961), Coast to Coast (1962), Henry Kendall (with A.D. Hope, 1972), and The Oxford History of Australian Literature (1981). Kramer was made OBE in 1976 and DBE in 1981.
