Malacanthidae
Malacanthidae (tilefish; subclass Actinopterygii, order Perciformes) A family of marine fish, known formerly as Branchiostegidae, found mainly in tropical and temperate waters. The rather elongate body possesses long dorsal and anal fins and a truncate tail fin, the pelvic fins being located under the pectorals. Although many species are less than 40 cm long, Caulolatilus princeps (ocean whitefish) of the eastern Pacific reaches a length of more than one metre. There are about 24 species.
